The Institute Digital Communication Environments IDCE, The Basel School of Design HGK FHNW and its students have influenced the international Graphic Design community since the 1960's. The former models of modernist design education were updated over the past years within the Swiss University system. They merge today the artistic, experimental and process-oriented tradition of the “Basel School of Design” with state-of-the-art image-, media- and technological-research.

Visual Communication and Digital Spaces BA
The BA course of the IDCE is enabling the students to create and analyze intriguing, surprising and informative images for communication. The students develop their specialization within a wide spectrum of options from typography to image-based messages, from print- to interactive-media, from identity design to information design.

Digital Communication Environments MA
Based on the competences to create intriguing visual messages for communication or to reflect upon images and media within the cultural sciences, the MA program merges practice-led design processes with the knowledge of iconic- and media-oriented theory. Students develop their individual and practical ability to create visual messages further, gain the ability to ground their design decisions on a scientific basis, and learn to conduct practice-led methodologies to conduct design research projects.

International Master of Design UIC/HGK (MDes/MAS)
The International Master of Design UIC/HGK (MDes Basel) is a collaboration of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and the Institute Digital Communication Environments IDCE, The Basel School of Design HGK FHNW. The program focuses on the analytical and process-oriented aspects of the Swiss design tradition. Alumni have developed careers in the context of the international practice of Graphic Design or as professors in the academic context of design education.

Application Winter Workshops 2023: from September 2022
The IDCE offers the Basel Summer Workshops for students, educators and practitioners in the field of visual communication, graphic design, communication design and media design. It is an opportunity for the participants of the workshops to experience the methodological approach of the Basel design education and to reflect upon traditional and cutting edge topics of the field.

The Academy’s location on the border between the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, as well as the three countries Switzerland, Germany and France, highlights the institution’s role as a mediator between different cultural contexts. The Academy of Art and Design is part of the Campus of the Arts, a cultural cluster, with art-, design-, and architecture-oriented institutions, enterprises, archives and exhibition spaces. The campus is located at a former custom-free zone in the city of Basel, the city of “culture unlimited”. The Academy has state of the art facilities from the auditoriums to the workshops which have been completed in 2015.
